Following the successful completion of our last retained search to appoint a Deputy Chief Membership Officer earlier this year, Sherrington Associates are once again retained by ICMIF, this time to recruit a new Chief Financial Officer.

The International Cooperative and Mutual Insurance Federation (ICMIF) is the global association for cooperative and mutual insurers. As a membership organisation, the Federation’s mission is to help its member companies achieve their strategic goals and sustainably grow in their local markets. Focusing on the key areas of mutuality, business transformation and resilience, ICMIF’s networking and business intelligence activities leverage the knowledge, competencies and experience of its global network of member-owned and purpose-led insurance companies across 60+ countries. Through its influence work, ICMIF represents the interests of global mutual/cooperative sector – accounting for 26.3% of the global insurance market – to key stakeholders around the themes of disaster risk reduction, sustainable development and inclusive insurance.


Chief Financial Officer

ICMIF is seeking a strategic, purpose-led Chief Financial Officer to provide financial leadership and stewardship during an important period of growth and organisational evolution. Reporting to the CEO and working closely with the senior leadership team and Board, the CFO will ensure robust financial management, effective governance and insightful decision support, while helping shape the organisation’s long-term strategy. As an international business operating across multiple currencies, ICMIF requires a CFO who can bring oversight, rigour and confidence to a small organisation operating in a complex global financial environment. The successful candidate will bring deep technical finance expertise, strong commercial judgement, digital confidence and an inclusive leadership approach.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the organisation’s financial strategy, planning, budgeting and forecasting, providing clear analysis and recommendations to support decision-making.
  • Ensure the integrity, accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting, statutory accounts, audit processes and regulatory compliance.
  • Provide strong financial stewardship across cashflow, investments, risk management, internal controls and balance sheet oversight.
  • Oversee managed equity and bond investments.
  • Partner with the CEO and senior leadership team to support growth, evaluate strategic opportunities and shape future organisational development.
  • Develop high-quality Board and Executive reporting, presenting financial performance, risks, scenarios and key business insights with credibility and clarity.
  • Drive continuous improvement in financial systems, processes and reporting, using digital tools, innovation and automation where appropriate.
  • Lead and develop the finance team, fostering accountability, high standards, collaboration and a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Oversee commercial and supplier-related financial matters, including major contracts, cost control and value optimisation.

About You...

The ideal candidate will be a credible finance leader with senior-level experience and the ability to engage effectively with the Board and executive stakeholders. They will combine strong financial management capability with strategic judgement and a forward-looking mindset.

Candidates may come from a variety of backgrounds including financial services, insurance or associations but more important is the ability to thrive in a values-driven, internationally focused organisation and contribute positively to change and innovation. The role also offers opportunities for global travel and the chance to network with, and learn from, some of the most inspiring CEOs in the insurance industry who serve on the ICMIF Board. The ideal candidate will be a credible finance leader with senior-level experience and the ability to engage effectively with the Board and executive stakeholders. They will combine strong financial management capability with strategic judgement and a forward-looking mindset. Experience in financial services or insurance would be advantageous but is not essential. More important is the ability to thrive in a values-driven, internationally focused organisation and contribute positively to change and innovation.
