Context
Sustainable leadership is complex, nuanced and vast subject, but the more employers can understand what qualities it takes to lead sustainably, the more successfully they can recruit leaders with the right stuff to make their organisation sustainable. So what do we mean by sustainable leadership?
Put simply, sustainable leadership is leadership that achieves a long-term future for the organisation, and that in spite of an ever-more complex operating landscape and more competitive market conditions, delivers sustainability for the organisation, for society and for the planet.
To do this successfully, a leadership team must be comprised of leaders who embody a whole range of different leadership qualities, from their individual and collective values, their knowledge and understanding, their leadership styles and skills and their inherent attributes that make them who they are.
Background
In 2021, Sherrington Associates began work developing a model of sustainable leadership. We did this by commissioning an academic research team to study all the available literature on the subject of sustainable leadership. After scrutinising the most credible sources of contemporary literature throughout an exhaustive literature review, the researchers aggregated the consensus points to build a new model founded on only the most widely-agreed qualities of sustainable leadership. We call this the 4A Model of Sustainable Leadership..
Interviewing for Sustainable Leadership
Choosing the right approach for leadership interviews is as subjective as it is contentious. We all have our own interview styles and preferences, and when it comes to assessing candidates for sustainable leadership, it can be a complicated and confusing affair if you’re unfamiliar with the very features that make a leader a sustainable leader.
Knowing that employers are now more focused than ever on achieving sustainability, and knowing how difficult it is to recruit the right leaders to achieve it, we’ve developed a world-first solution to assessing leadership candidates for their ability to deliver sustainability. Through a twenty-eight question survey that scrutinises the thirteen qualities of sustainable leadership in the 4A Model, we are now helping employers of all shapes and sizes to develop robust hiring models that give them the best chance of recruiting the right leaders to make a difference.
