Chester Zoo
Chester Zoo is the largest zoological gardens in the UK, the fourth largest zoo in Europe and the seventh largest zoo in the world. Spread across 125 acres and home to 15,000 animals, the zoo opened in 1931 by George Mottershead and today George’s zoo is one of the most well-known visitor attractions in the UK.
The zoo is experiencing transformational change. Since November 2015 when the hugely ambitious ‘Islands’ project was opened, a 60,000 square metres (15 acres) space that has recreated the amazing tropical environment of six South East Asian islands, Chester Zoo has experienced an unprecedented surge in annual membership, from 35,000 pre-Islands to over 85,000 one year on. The success of ‘Islands’ has significantly enhanced awareness of the zoo’s work to deliver conservation programmes in South East Asia, protecting some of the world’s most endangered species. But work continues and funding is continually sought to drive the success of new programmes in other parts of the world.
