Sherrington are the retained search partner for Hospice of the Good Shepherd in their search for a new Chair of the Board.

Founded in 1983, The Hospice of the Good Shepherd (HGS) is a registered charity, whose role is to provided End of Life Care (EOLC) and Support to those who are living with or effected by limiting illness for communities of West Cheshire and Deeside. The Hospice has a 10 bed Palliative Acute Care Inpatient Unit. Their activities play a key role in providing Health, Social Care, Living Well and Bereavement Services.

The Charity is part funded National Health Service England (currently 23%) with the majority of the funding coming from Hospice’s own fundraising activities. The Board and Senior Management Team (SMT) of HGS strive for excellence through the services it delivers and in the way the operation is managed and run. The Hospice employees 120 staff and is supported by 350 volunteers.


Chair of the Board - Hospice of the Good Shepherd

Following the planned retirement of the current Chair, HGS are seeking to recruit a new Chair to mentor and advise on the strategic direction of the organisation whilst ensuring its continued long-term success, at a time when the demand and need for End-of-Life Care continues to rise. The need for acute palliative care beds for West Cheshire and Deeside currently stands at 22 beds. The charity fundraising climate is also particularly challenging. There is also the imperative that the Chair leads on safeguarding the Hospice’s reputation to include financial stability and ensure it achieves its aims and objectives efficiently, effectively and in accordance with its legal and known regulatory requirements.

Prior experience operating effectively in a NED or Chair within a related sector is desirable, as is the ability to think strategically, act independently, and build strong collaborative relationships. As part of the recruitment process, HGS promotes diversity and is interested to from commercially minded individuals with well-rounded leadership experience and a deep appreciation of finance, risk management and internal controls, plus has empathy for the charity’s aims and objectives.

  • Ensuring the Board focuses on its key tasks
  • Engaging the Board in assessing and improving its performance
  • Overseeing the induction and development of the SMT
  • Supporting the CEO
  • Be a strong leader with personal and professional credibility
  • Possess a high degree of probity and integrity.
  • Impartiality, fairness, and the ability to respect confidences.
  • Ability to ensure decisions are taken and followed up/
  • Tact and diplomacy
  • Work in a collaborative, open and engaging style

  • Understanding of the roles/responsibilities of management committees
  • Experience of organisational people management
  • Knowledge of the operating environment for charities
  • Be able to commit the time necessary to undertake the role to a high standard

Terms and Conditions:

  • The total time commitment is approximately 3 to 4 days per month to include quarterly board meetings, typically held face to face at the Hospice, located in Backford, Chester
  • To support colleagues' engagement with the business, occasionally meetings will be held at Backford, an alternative site or virtually
  • Other activities include strategic planning events (typically held annually), induction, appraisal, and training and development activities of the Trustees, and other ad-hoc meetings for urgent matters
  • The is a voluntary role so there is no remuneration though expenses incurred will be covered in line with HGS policy
